2001 chevy tahoe LT suspension lift?
i have an 01 tahoe LT 5.3 liter 4×4 and i want to lift it. i know lift kits and bigger wheels affect the mpg, and i was wondering how many inches i can lift it and what size wheels can i put on it to keep the mpg close to what i get now? (i get 14/18 mpg) for example if i put a 6″ suspension lift and 35″ Mud Terrain Tires, will i see a huge change in mpg?
in order to keep your tahoe mpg’s you will need to change differential gears. here are some suspension choices

following are build codes that will tell you which differential gears are in your truck (look at the “G and H” codes on your tahoe’s build sheet)

once you know which gears you have then go to Randy’s Ring & Pinion and use their rpm calculator to see what rpm’s you will be running with 35″ tires and what gear ratio you will need to change to to bring you engine back to stock range.

running 35″ tires without changing differential gears will cause your engine to lug. (it’s like always starting out in second gear instead of first) it changes your shift points and you may find your transmission hunting for the right gear to be in at 35 to 40 miles per hour and even at highway speeds (no power in o/d) if this occurs the transmission will heat up and could fail.
the only real solution is to go to 411 or 456 gears.
i know because that’s what happend to our truck, stock was 373 gears, needed to go to 411 gears when we added 33/1250r 15 tires.

One final note, some mud rated tires will give you a better mpg and have better road manners that others.
